D.L. Hawkins
D.L. Hawkins Six months prior to most of the series' events, D.L. was a construction worker. He and his wife Niki were having financial troubles and construction didn't pay very well. At one point, they considered letting Niki's father, Hal, into their lives. Being successful in the stock market, Hal seemed like he could be a good grandfather and help them finacially. However, they soon realized he was still the same abusive, short tempered man that Niki had tried to forget and did not accept him back into their lives. At some point, D.L. began leading a group of criminals who all wore skull rings. Ultimately, he left the gang before they stole two million dollars and killed a security guard, but he was arrested for the crime. Frustrated by police and his general situation, he discovered he possessed the ability to phase through solid matter. Although he did not consider it freedom, D.L. used his power to escape prison in hopes of clearing his name and protecting his family.

Niki Sanders
Niki Sanders Niki grew up with a wealthy, though abusive, alcoholic father named Hal Sanders. Hal would often beat Niki and her sister, Jessica, during his drunken rages. Eventually, Hal choked Jessica to death and left his remaining daughter. As an adult, Niki had no memory of her father's actions and simply believed he ran out on her. At some point in her life, Niki herself became an alcoholic and a problem gambler, but managed to overcome her problems. On her first anniversary of sobriety (April 24, 2006), Niki attended an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. There she was reunited with her father, Hal, who wanted to make amends for his mistakes. Niki introduced Hal to her husband, D.L., and her son, Micah. Hal gave the boy a computer, but when he became angry at his grandson for taking the expensive gift apart, Niki demanded that he leave. After her father's departure, Niki's alternate personality surfaced and she went to confront him. Jessica told her father that she remembers everything he did to her, including his responsibility in "[her] death," even though Niki doesn't remember any of it. After assaulting him, she forced the check Hal gave Niki into his mouth and ordered him never to contact her again.

Peter Petrelli
Peter Petrelli In the premiere episode, Peter Petrelli is a nurse living in New York City. He is sensitive and compassionate, wears his heart on his sleeve and is described as a "dreamer". Peter is also defined by his complex relationship with his older brother, Nathan, to whom he feels very close, even claiming he has a sort of metaphysical connection that allowed him to know immediately when Nathan suffered a serious accident in the past. Differences between Peter and Nathan, an ambitious politician who is so focused on his congressional campaign that he shows no compassion when their mother is arrested for shoplifting, have caused tensions among the brothers.

Isaac Mendez
Isaac Mendez Isaac Mendez's story began in the first episode, where he was a struggling, tortured artist living in New York City. His girlfriend and art dealer was Simone Deveaux. However, Mendez was addicted to heroin, and had little success quitting permanently, which put a strain on his relationship with Simone. This strain is worsened when Isaac realized he could see ambiguous future events and paint them when high on heroin. Isaac at first assumed the paintings to be "evil" and tried to destroy them, but Simone saw them as artistically impressive. Near the end of the pilot, Isaac overdosed. Simone brought help in the form of nurse Peter Petrelli, and Isaac survived.
